Based on our intense research into furniture manufacturers we have assembled this list, ranking the top leather furniture brands.  We've identified the most important factors when purchasing a new leather sofa and have ranked each furniture brand on a scale of 1 to 5 for each of these factors.  Here are each of the factors and a description of what each factor entails. Note, we've also provided a legend as to what each numerical factor ranking means for each category.

Quality - This ranking evaluates the leather materials used by the manufacturer, including where it is sourced. In addition to the leather quality, we evaluate the frame quality of the furniture, examining materials used in building the frame, whether using hardwoods (good) or engineered woods (bad). Lastly, our quality rating looks at overall craftsmanship and suspension quality.

Value - This ranking evaluates what we believe the ultimate value of the furniture is. Not necessarily ranked on the dollar value of the furniture, but the cost of the furniture relative to the overall quality of the furniture.

Warranty  - We examine the manufacturer's warranty and try to determine whether the manufacturer is living up to its declared warranty standards.

Reviews - This ranking evaluates the publicly accessible consumer reviews and our discussions with consumers that have purchased specific products from a manufacturer. Are the consumers happy with the design and quality of their purchase?

* Note we are constantly reviewing all furniture manufacturers.  If there is one you think we missed or if you disagree with our reviews, please leave a comment below or get in touch at tom@bestleathercouches.com

Note that in some cases we provide a review/ranking on a store that actually sells different manufacturers...a good example of this is Costco, which sells different brand name furniture pieces.

About the author Tom

When I started shopping for a leather couch two years ago, I was confused and overwhelmed by the information available to me. I decided to launch Best Leather Couches in order to create the best resource for shoppers looking for a new leather couch. I hope you enjoy the site. 1. Thank you for your website and this very interesting article. I love, love, the look of West Elm furniture, particularly their sofas. I have been very happy with small pieces (non upholstered) and accessories from West Elm. However, based on this blog, some external reviews, the lack of reviews on West Elm, and some personal experiences dealing with sales associates in West Elm stores, I am very unlikely to ever purchase a sofa or other upholstered piece from them. So, where do we get the West Elm look but with good quality AND good service at reasonable, not necessarily cheap, prices? Does such a place exist? In reviewing your listed ratings of leather companies, it seems that the best rated companies tend to sell sofas with a more traditional (maybe dated?) look. Available mid-century sofas (leather or not) seem to be attractive but poorly made or well made but astronomically priced and available through designers.

    1. I agree it is a hard balance. I’ve had good luck personally with Hancock and Moore which has some more mid-century modern designs. Certainly worth checking out.

    1. Hey fyi I keep seeing sofas like that in Homesense (on the east coast) for half the price of overstock. they have green and orange.

    1. hi Kim, I haven’t looked at Frontgage before, but if we do get a chance, I can get a piece going. Feel free to let me know what you think if you end up buying something from them.

  2. Hi Tom
I was surprised that you gave Costco a good rating for leather furniture. I have a copy of the review posted around 15 years ago (or thereabouts) and the brand Abbyson was given a ranking of the bottom of the barrel. I have looked at Abbyson while in the store and I believe the previous review was right on the money. Seems like Klausner and Lazyboy have come down in quality also.
I am interested in a used sectional by Bernhardt. I have another sectional from Bradington Young that was made in 1989 and it is still beautiful. When I saw the sectional on facebook marketplace I thought it had to be the same brand. But no it's a Bernhardt, which promotes itself as a luxury brand. I did some research on Bernhardt and apparently there are multiple furniture makers who make the exact same sofa form the sublime to the gorblimey, Starting with Thomasville, Leather Shoppes,Abbyson, American Heritage etc. The sectional is at ar right angle and it has leather studded arms that have an elegant curve, the leather Im looking at on all of these brands appears to be the same rich brown that has different shades of brown, it's called whisky brown by some companies.
Can you shed light on why so many sofa brands look alike and appear to be expensive well made sectionals.
    Also Bernhardt sofa?

  3. My husband and I have been shopping for quality leather furniture, Top Grain lrather, Solid Hardwood Frame, Comfortable, beautiful lines. Have come to conclude there is no such animal. Even Hancock & & Moore, which BTW is very hard to find in a showroom other than North Carolina, lacks transitional styles and options to customize. Suggestions?
